Private schools are founded and run by an organization or group of people other than the government. Private schools typically charge tuition and may have a religious mission statement. Some private schools offer scholarships or other tuition assistance programs.

- Learn more about private schools from the various associations that represent them: the South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA), the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools (SCACS), the Palmetto Association of Independent Schools (PAIS), or the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI).
- For parents of children with exceptional needs, a tax credit scholarship program called Exceptional SC may be able to help you cover tuition costs at eligible private schools.
- You may also qualify for a refundable parental tax credit through Exceptional SC of up to $11,000. The tax credit is called refundable because if the taxes owed by the parents are less than the total credit allowed, they may receive a payment equal to the balance of the unused credit.
