Parent Update #1

You may have heard in recent news reports that Governor McMaster’s team has been in court, fighting for you and your family.

Opponents of Governor McMaster’s SAFE Grant program are attempting to run out the clock on the urgent education relief these grants would provide to thousands of South Carolina students and their families.

We know this delay is a major obstacle for families like yours who are trying to make decisions for your students this fall. Like you, we are disappointed to see people playing politics with children’s futures.

But while this speed bump may slow us down, it is not the end of the road.

We are confident in the constitutionality of this program, which is just like multiple other programs such as the higher education Tuition Grants Program and the pre-K Child & Early Reading Education Development Program that South Carolina has had in place for years, as well as programs in other states that have been found constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The SAFE Grants program is currently under a temporary restraining order, while the lawyers petition the South Carolina Supreme Court to take up the case to bring it to a quick resolution. We will provide more concrete details about SAFE Grants’ timeline for moving forward just as soon as we know more.

But in the meantime, we need your help.

Would you share your story of what a SAFE Grant would mean for your family? We need our leaders to understand that SAFE Grants are about getting real help to real people in the face of this challenging pandemic.

COVID-19 has impacted every student in our state, and all students deserve our help, wherever they learn.

Stay tuned for important SAFE Grant updates in coming days…and please take a minute to share your story!
